In places like the Torres Strait, rising seas are already washing away burial grounds and sacred sites. Indigenous leaders are responding with powerful climate advocacy, calling for stronger national action and international support. At the same time, Indigenous communities are taking practical steps such as restoring mangroves, protecting coastal dunes, and using traditional knowledge to guide adaptation plans.
Across Australia, defending against sea level rise means combining modern science with Indigenous knowledge. Sea walls and engineering can help, but so can cultural burning, sustainable water management, and land care practices that strengthen ecosystems and reduce erosion.
By listening to Traditional Owners and respecting their leadership, we can protect both Country and culture. Together, we can build resilient coastlines and ensure that rising seas do not wash away our heritage—or our future.
